Scientifically Oriented Fundamentals of wind energy systems

Profile

The diploma course in Scientifically Oriented Fundamentals of Wind Energy Systems (SOF) provides the basic knowledge required to understand the principles behind the economically and ecologically efficient transformation of wind energy. It further provides knowledge about how to design new wind turbines or components of wind turbines beyond the state of the art in wind engineering. In addition to improving basic engineering knowledge, this diploma course also serves as a basis for studying more technically or methodologically oriented diploma courses and for studying the complete online M.Sc. program in Wind Energy Systems.

Qualification

The students of the SOF diploma course will learn about the basic electrical and mechanical components of wind energy systems, their design requirements and realized constructions and designs. They will learn to apply mathematics at an advanced level, which enables engineers to understand the ordinary and partial differential equations describing the behavior of the electrical system, the structural components and the fluid flow of wind turbines. They will further be able to solve fundamental relations of electrics, electronics and mechanics of wind turbines.

The module components concerning mechanics will lead to an understanding of action forces, internal reactions and mathematical models describing the behavior of wind turbine structures and the air and water flow around wind power plants. In combination with basic competencies in programming languages and applying software products, the students will be well prepared to understand numerical methods and mechanical models used in engineering applications and in commercial simulation tools, and to overcome limitations of software packages for computational fluid and structural mechanics and electrical engineering. The diploma course will qualify engineers of various disciplines, natural scientists and mathematicians to adapt their competencies to wind engineering.
