Inside arts - The Document Summer School

The Summer Course in the Heart of Europe

The documenta Summer School in Kassel is a unique short term education program specially dedicated to students interested in arts. The participants take a specifically created seminar class and will experience the benefits of studying in another country. The documenta program focusses on academic education, while also creating an environment that encourages learning in and about another culture, both through activities and well chosen lectures.

The documenta Summer School will take place in collaboration with the documenta studies at the Kunsthochschule Kassel.

Julia Stolba, study assistant at the documenta studies, will conduct a programme on critical documenta research and practice for the Summer School. In conversation with documenta professor Nora Sternfeld we will discuss about documenta´s history and present as well as about wider relevant curatorial practices, histories and institutions. Each seminar consists of 20 contact hours and is worth 3 credit points.

documenta - Inside Arts

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The documenta in Kassel is one of the most important and well known modern arts exhibitions in the world. Since the beginning in 1953, it has grown continuously and can be experienced not only in museums and art halls but also in many places throughout the city, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. In fact, in 2017 more than one million visitors came to North Hesse. The University of Kassel offers interested students and graduates, especially from the areas of Fine Arts, Cultural Sciences and also Economics, the chance to get involved with the theory and practice of documenta and to learn about its history up to now. “Inside Arts” offers insight in how to curate an exhibition of this dimension – from pre-planning to the management of the documenta, including international marketing. We will visit the documenta Archive, art galleries and museums exhibiting documenta art. In addition, 2019 is the year of the Bauhaus centennial, which will be celebrated with the Kassel exhibition Bauhaus / documenta. Vision und Marke (vision and brands) which allows us to discuss these two concepts together with the organisers of the exhibition.

The course finishes with the Berlin trip. In the capital, we will experience street art, which Berlin is famous for, including the East Side Gallery – the longest remaining part of the Berlin wall painted with graffiti art. Famous art museums like the Nationalgalerie / Museum Island, the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart (Museum of Contemporary Art), or the Gemäldegalerie with masterpieces from the Middle Ages to Baroque will also be a part of the trip.

After the Berlin tour, you can continue with the seminar in intercultural communication or with a seminar in Venice at the University Ca‘ Foscari on the topic of the Venice arts exhibition “Biennale”.
